Hat trick for Cloutier and a new playoff record

Réal Cloutier scored his 14th, 15th and 16th of the playoffs, beating the 14 goals record from Rosaire Paiement in 1977 with the Nationals as the Maple Leafs easily defeated the Black Hawks 6-1 to take serious 3-1 lead in the Avco Cup final. Cloutier ended the game with four points, Larry Patey scored twice, Serge Beaudoin and Mike Bossy have three assists each. With 25 points so far, Cloutier is five points from the playoff record of 30, held by Robbie Ftorek with Phoenix in 1981. Even though they scored six goals, Toronto was 0 for 8 on the power play, Jim Schoenfeld scored Chicago's only goal.

Remember Minnesota?

Remember that 17 goals game that went in overtime in the second round between Chicago and Minnesota? This time only 15 goals were scored... only 15!!! The Maple Leafs took a 2-1 lead in the Avco Cup final with an 8-7 overtime victory against the Black Hawks. Mike Bossy scored the winner at 6:34 of the overtime, his 6th goal of the playoffs. Réal Cloutier scored his 12th and 13th, Wayne Dillon recorded four points, Jacques Richard, Rick Middleton (10th goal) and Mike Bossy have three points each. For Chicago, Gerry Teeple recorded four points, he now have 23 (record is 30). Wayne Merrick have a goal and two assists. Seven goals were scored in the second period, five of them in the first half of the period.

Chicago mobs Toronto

After a surprising 3-0 to the Maple Leafs, the Black Hawks came back with a radical 7-1 victory to tie the Avco Cup final 1-1. Dennis Abgrall (2 goals), Gerry Teeple and Dave Gardner have three points each with Chicago, Dave Elenbaas only faced 15 shots for his 8th win of the playoffs.

Herron and Bossy amazingly surprise the Hawks

Mike Bossy scored all the Maple Leafs goals while Denis Herron gave nothing to the Black Hawks in a 3-0 victory. Herron made 24 saves for his 9th win of the playoffs, Real Cloutier and Serge Beaudoin have two assists each. For Bossy, who was having some pretty quiet playoffs so far, scored his 3rd, 4th and 5th. Bossy scored all three goals within 3 minutes in the third period, a new playoff record.

The O's will meet for the 11th Avco Cup Final

For the first time ever in the WHAS, Toronto and Chicago will meet for the Avco Cup, it is also a first final for the Maple Leafs, last year the Black Hawks lost in six games against the Jets.

Al Hamilton scored at 3:48 of the overtime to give the Black Hawks a 4-3 victory against the North Stars to win the series in seven games. Teeple, Gardner and Abgrall also scored for Chicago who was leading 3-1 after two periods. Mike Antonovitch scored the Stars fisr goal in the first and they came back in the third with two goals to tie the game 3-3. Jim Harrison put the game 3-2 Hawks until Bob Guindon silenced the crowd with the tying goal at 19:40 in the third. Dave Elenbaas made 25 saves for his 7th win, Michel Dion lost his first game in that final with Minnesota (3-1), he blocked 29 shots.

In Toronto, Wayne Dillon scored two goals to propel the Leafs toward their first final by defeating the Canadiens 4-2. Serge Beaudoin and Réal Cloutier (11th) also scored for Toronto. Glenn Anderson and Wayne Greztky scored for Montréal. The Habs only shot 17 times on Denis Herron who gets his 8th win of the playoffs (8-3), Richard Brodeur (7-6) blocked 28 shots for the Canadiens. It's the first time since 1981 (Phoenix vs Winnipeg) that a team comes back from trailing 1-3 to win the series.

The final will begin Friday night in Chicago.

Hawks and Stars rewrite the record book ; Leafs will go for seven

In a game where both teams seem to forgot their goaltenders in the licker room, the Black Hawks and North Stars scored 17 goals for a new playoff record as Chicago defeated Minnesota 9-8 in overtime. Bill Young, Bob Guindon and Mike Gartner scored two goals each for Minnesota, Young ended the game with four points. Dennis Abgrall scored twice with Chicago, Morris Lukowich recorded four points, Jim Schoenfeld, Dave Gardner and Gerry Teeple have three points each. Wayne Merrick scored the winning goal at 5:24 of the overtime, his 8th of the playoffs. That series in now tied 3-3 and will end tomorrow night in Chicago.

In Toronto, the Maple Leafs tied their Canada Conference final 3-3, after trailing 3-1, by defeating the Canadiens 5-4. Rick Middleton scored two goals for Toronto, Steve Carlyle also scored twice for Montréal. The Habs were leading 2-1 after the first period until the Leafs scored three power play goals in the second period. Denis Herron (7-3) made 16 saves for the victory, Toronto shot 33 times on John Garrett and Richard Brodeur. That final will also end tomorrow night, in Toronto.

Dion and the Stars take the lead

Michel Dion (3-0) made 27 saves for the North Stars in a 4-3 victory against the Black Hawks to take a 3-2 lead in the US Conference final with three consecutive wins. Jim Harrison (3 pts) scored twice for Minnesota, Bob Guindon recorded three assists. The Stars were leading 4-0 in the second period when Chicago tried to come back. The Stars scored three times on power plays, the series could end tomorrow in Minnesota.

In Toronto, the Maple Leafs stayed alive in the Canada Conference final with a 3-1 victory over the Canadiens. Middleton, Bossy and Propp scored in the second period for Toronto, Denis Herron blocked 17 shots for his 6th win of the playoffs. Ron Chipperfield scored Montréal's only goal. The Habs now lead that series 3-2 which continues tomorrow in Montréal.

North Stars tie US Final, Maple Leafs in trouble

The North Stars have "easily" defeated the Black Hawks 6-4 to tie the US Conference final 2-2. "Easy" because Minnesota was leading the scored 6-1 in the third period when Chicago scored three consecutive goals. Gavin Kirk and Bob Guindon have three points each for the Stars, Bernie Lukowich scored twice for the Hawks. The series goes back to Chicago tomorrow.

In Montréal, the Canadiens took a 3-1 lead in the Canada Conference final against the Maple Leafs after a 4-3 win tonight. Glenn Anderson and Wayne Gretzky have a goal and an assist each for Montréal, Réal Cloutier scored his 9th of the playoffs with Toronto. The series goes back to Toronto tomorrow night.

Habs win in overtime (again)

Montréal took a 2-1 lead against Toronto after another 5-4 victory in overtime. Jari Kurri scored twice, including the winner at 8:07 of the overtime. Terry Ewasiuk also scored two goals for the Canadiens, Réal Cloutier scored his 8th of the playoffs with the Maple Leafs.

In Minnesota, Mark Howe scored two goals and Doug Ferguson recorded three assists to help the North Stars defeating the Black Hawks 6-2. Mike Antonovitch, Gavin Kirk and JIm Harrison have a goal and an assist each for Minnesota. Michel Dion blocked 25 shots for his first win and first start of the current playoffs. Chicago lead the US Conference final 2-1.

Habs win in overtime

THe Canadiens tied their series 1-1 against the Maple Leafs after a 5-4 overtime win in Toronto. The Leafs were leading 4-3 late in the third period when Rod Langway scored his second of the playoffs at 19:01, sending the game in overtime. Ron Chipperfield gave Montréal the win on a power play at 12:50 of the extra period.

In Chicago, the Black Hawks took a 2-0 lead in their series against the Whalers with a 5-3 victory. Dave Gardner scored once and added two assists while Don Kozak scored his 6th of the playoffs. Dave Elenbaas made 17 saves for his sixth win of the playoffs, Doug Ferguson was ejected from the game after just 42 seconds of play.

Win and loss for the Black Hawks

The Black Hawks took a 1-0 lead in their conference final against the North Stars with a 4-3 victory, a game which also caused a loss for Chicago as Ed Gilbert will miss 2 to 4 weeks of play from an eye injury. Dave Gardner and Don Kozak have a goal and an assist each for Chicago, Dave Elenbaas made 16 saves for his 5th win of the playoffs.

In Toronto, Réal Cloutier scored two goals to help the Maple Leafs defeat the Canadiens 5-4. Jacques Richard scored once and added two assists with Toronto, Wayne Gretzky also recorded three points with Montréal. Denis Herron (5-1) made 26 saves for the win, the Leafs take a 1-0 lead in the Canada conference final.

Too little, too late

All first round playoff games ended tonight, all by a single goal. First of all, after taking a 2-0 lead in their series, the Jets crumbled under the pressure and failed to win another game as they let the Canadiens come back to win in six games. Winnipeg did it's best tonight but they were trailing 4-1 when they tried to come back in the third period, the game ended 5-4 for Montréal. Ron Chipperfield recorded three points for the Habs, Peter Sullivan scored twice for the Jets. The Canadiens will play vs the Maple Leafs in the second round.

In Minnesota, the North Stars won their first home game of their series, which was enough to eliminate the Roadrunners in six games with a 3-2 overtime win. Rob Walton scored after only 40 seconds of play in the overtime, his second goal of the playoffs. Mike Antonovitch and Gavin Kirk have two assists each. The Stars will meet either the Black Hawks or Whalers in the second round.

They will meet the Black Hawks who eliminated the Whalers in six games after a spectacular 4-3 victory. Spectacular because Hartford was leading the game 3-0 into the third period until Ken Houston received a five minutes penalty which Chicago used to scored three goals under two minutes. At 10:07, Ron Smith scored the winner, his first of the playoffs. Terry Caffery scored a pair of goals for the Whalers.

Habs take the lead ; Nordiques kicked out

The Canadiens took a 3-2 lead against the Jets in their series with a 4-3 overtime win. Montréal was trailing the seven games series 0-2 but won the three following games. Jari Kurri scored the overtime winner, Ron Chipperfield scored twice. The Maple Leafs eliminated the Nordiques savagely with an 8-1 victory in Toronto. Rick Middleton scored a hat trick for the Leafs, Danny Gruen recorded four assists and Wayne Dillon scored twice and added an assist. The Leafs win that series 4-1 against the Nords. In Chicago, the Whalers are not dead yet. They pulled out a great game toward a 2-1 victory, the Hawks now lead the series 3-2. Bruce Affleck and Robbie Ftorek scored for Hartford, Mike Veisor made 28 saves. In Phoenix, the North Stars took a 3-2 lead against the Roadrunners with a 5-3 win. No team have won a home game so far after five meetings. Bill Young recorded three points for Minnesota, Mike Gartner scored his 4th of the playoffs.

Whalers and Nordiques survive... for now

The Whalers came back from trailing 1-3 and 2-4 against the Black Hawks to stay alive with a 6-5 overtime victory. Tom Webster scored twice for Hartford, including the overtime winner at 1:08 of the extra period, Terry Caffery recorded three assists. Don Kozak scored a pair of goals for Chicago, Risto Siltanen have three assists. The Hawks lead that series 3-1.

In Québec City, Peter Stastny scored two goals with the Nordiques in a 5-1 win against the Maple Leafs. Tomas Jonsson and Eric Vail have two assists each with Québec, Pelle Lindberg made 22 saves, Real Cloutier scored the Leafs' only goal. Toronto lead that series 3-1.

In Montréal, the Canadiens tied their series 2-2 against the Jets with an easy 7-1 victory at the Forum. Jari Kurri and Jim Watson have two goals each for Montréal, Richard Brodeur blocked 20 shots. Derek Kuntz scored the only goal for Winnipeg, on a power play. Lemelin gave up 5 goals from 19 shots.

In Minnesota, in the "visitor" series, the Roadrunners defeated the North Stars 6-2 to tie that series 2-2 after trailing 0-2. Dennis Ververgaert, Bob Manno and Bob Gainey scored two goals each with Phoenix, Eddie Mio was injured after just two minutes of play in the first period. Dan Bouchard goaled a much better game that his two first ones.

Four points for Wayne Merrick, Whalers in trouble

Wayne Merrick scored once and added three assists with the Black Hawks in a 7-3 violent win in Hartford. After a quiet first period, both teams played a total of 15 power plays in the second and third. Gerry Teeple and Morris Lukowich scored two goals each for Chicago who now lead the series 3-0. In Québec City, the Maple Leafs also took a 3-0 lead in their series as they easily beat the Nordiques 7-2. Rick Middleton recorded four points for Toronto who scored five consecutive goals in the second period. Danny Gruen scored once and added two assists for the Leafs. Wayne Gretzky saved the Canadiens with two goals in a 5-4 Habs win over the Jets. Marc Tardif recorded three points with the Canadiens, Winnipeg lead that series 2-1. In Minnesota, the visitors also saved their skin with a victory, the Roadrunners defeated the North Stars 6-2. Dan Bouchard who was pretty much bad during the first two games lost his place to Eddie Mio who made 25 saves. Veli Pekka Ketola and Rick Lapointe scored two goals each. The Stars lead that series 2-1.

2-0 everywhere

John Hughes scored in overtime for the Maple Leafs who defeated the Nordiques 3-2. Toronto lead the series 2-0 against Québec. Two goals and one assist for Christian Bordeleau with the Jets who defeated the Canadiens 3-1. Winnipeg take a 2-0 lead against Montréal. Three points for Don Kozak with the Black Hawks who easily defeated the Whalers6-3. Chicago lead that series 2-0 against Hartford. Finally, two goals for Jim Harrison with the North Stars in a 5-4 victory against the Roadrunners who lost their two home games. Minnesota lead 2-0.

Take that commissioner!

Ulf Nilsson recorded four points, Howe, Kirk and Guindon have three points each as the North Stars easily beat the Roadrunners 7-2. Reggie Lemelin made 20 saves for the Jets while the Canadiens didn't score goals from 8 power plays as Winnipeg defeated Montréal 1-0. Tom Edur scored the only goal of the game. The Black Hawks took a 1-0 lead in their series by defeating the Whalers 3-2. Dave Elenbaas blocked 30 shots. Goal scoring leader Réal Cloutier scored twice for the Maple Leafs who defeated the Nordiques 4-3. A goal and an assist each for Gruen and Dillon.

Al Smith retires

At 37 years old, third best record in the WHAS with 259 wins, first overall with 27 shutouts, Al Smith have decided to retire after 10 seasons with the Hartford Whalers. Last season's record was a big decision for Smith with a simple record of 12-11-2 in 33 games, no shutout. Smith played in 540 games in the WHAS, all with the Whalers from 1973 to 1982. He kept a career goals against average of 3.23 and a save percentage of 0.882. He won one Avco Cup with the Whalers in six games agaisnt the Oilers in 1975. He also kept a record of 24-30-0 in 61 playoff games with 3 shutouts.

Calgary Flames pick Ron Hextall as 1982 top prospect

As one of the biggest surprise ever, goaltender Ron Hextall from the Brandon Wheat Kings was selected first overall by the Calgary Flames during the 1982 Entry Draft in Phoenix, Arizona. Hextall, which was not even rated for last year's draft kept a record of 12-11-0 with Bradon, including an horrible 5.71 goals against average. Hextall was rated a 6th round pick in the NHL in 1982.

The second pick, by the Ottawa Nationals, was center Doug Gilmour from the Cornwall Royals in the OHL. In 67 games with Cornwall, Gilmour scored 47 goals and added 73 assists for 119 points. Was on Cornwall (QMJHL) team that moved into OHL prior to 1981-82 season with whom he won the Memorial Cup.

Third pick, by the Los Angeles Kings, was right winger Brian Bellows from the Kitchener Rangers of the OHL. In only 47 games, he scored 45 goals and added 52 assists for 97 points. Rated in The Hockey News draft preview issue as the No. 1 overall prospect and No. 1 OHL prospect for the 1982 NHL draft. Rated No. 1 overall prospect for 1982 Entry Draft by NHL Central Scouting. Coached Kitchener for two games while head coach Joe Crozier was suspended from Nov. 18-24, 1981.
